Rumson man pulls girl, dog from frigid Navesink River
Pair fell through ice on Navesink
January 31, 2010
RUMSON – A Good Samaritan rescued an unidentified 10-year-old girl and her pet dog Saturday morning after
both had fallen through the ice into the frigid waters of the Navesink River, officials said. Rumson police responded
to a 911 call about 9 a.m. Saturday, Police Chief Richard Tobias said. Police said the fourth-grade girl, who was
walking her dog, had taken him onto the floating dock that juts out into the Navesink River. According to the victim,
the dog bolted after seeing birds take off from the river and ran off the dock onto the ice. The girl, who was attached
to the dog by his leash, was pulled off the dock onto the ice. Another young girl, who lives on the Avenue of Two Rivers
adjacent to the river, heard her cries for help.
She told her father, Jack Reichert, who ran down to the dock to find the girl and dog unable to pull themselves up. Reichert
reached down and immediately pulled both the girl and her dog out of the frigid waters. Police credit Reichert and his 10
year-old daughter with saving the girl and her dog from tragedy. "She is one lucky little girl," said Police Lt. Scott Patterson,
who responded to the call with two other officers. "Who knows what would have happened if they weren't home, and Reichert's
daughter hadn't heard her cries and he didn't have the sense to know what to do," Patterson said. "These two people clearly
helped avoid a tragedy." After rescuing the girl and dog, Reichert brought them inside the house to wrap them in warm blankets
until the Rumson First Aid squad arrived. Police Sgt. Chris York and Patrolman Richie Torres assisted at the scene. The girl
was examined by the Rumson First Aid Squad members at the home of her rescuers, Tobias said.
